Woodworking chisels are used for making holes and joints . Chisels have blades made from either tool steel or carbon steel. Chisel, or more preciselly its handle is strucked by a wooden or metal hamer, depending on the quality of the chisel

Japanes chisels - characterised by high hardness and sharpness, they are made from high quality high-carbon steel. Their lades are made from several layers of both hard and soft steel. Japanese chisels the blade is very distinct with both layers of steel beeing clearly visible (soft layer on top and hard layer in the bottom)
